Hello, I’m Amy Granillo, a doctor of integrative & functional nutrition and a business owner of 16 years. I began working in human nutrition 14 years ago in 2012 and opened a separate private practice focused on canine diet formulation and herbalism 9 years ago in 2017. In that work, I collaborate with dog owners, commercial food companies, veterinarians, and other companion animal health care providers.
I love dogs, so helping people resolve a situation with their dog’s health through a correctly balanced diet or food therapy brings me great joy.
I grew up helping my Gramma raw feed her animals, but she didn’t do this because she had a lot of money or formal education in nutrition. She raw fed because she came from a poor Appalachian Kentucky farming family, where resources were limited and food came first from what could be grown, raised, or hunted, and second from what could be purchased. There was a practical, lived understanding that real food was better for people, and that nothing was wasted.
I formulate raw and cooked diets for dogs of all ages, with a focused specialty in growth diets for puppies, particularly large and extra-large breed puppies. I offer food therapy services for a handful of specific conditions. I work with a small number of commercial raw and cooked dog food companies each year on both short-term and long-term product formulation and nutrition consulting. Part of my work for commercial companies and other canine nutrition providers includes ingredient database creation, writing code for diet spreadsheets, nutrition training, and business training. I’ve also begun working with an increasing number of veterinary hospitals and companion animal health clinics, both in person and online, as businesses have shifted how they operate since the pandemic. For many, having a contracted canine nutrition and herbal practitioner has become more feasible than managing high staff turnover.
I taught myself about herbs as a teenager and into young adulthood, and that interest crossed over to dogs in much the same way my passion for nutrition did. After years of self-directed study in canine herbalism, I eventually entered into a four-year direct mentorship with canine herbalist Rita Hogan.
I formulate herbal and homeopathic protocols for clients and maintain a small apothecary here in Southern California.
I guest-teach nutrition courses and speak from time to time, and one of my favorite professional accomplishments has been developing a comprehensive professional certificate program where I teach canine nutrition, science-based diet formulation, and business. Students who successfully complete the program earn their credential as a Certified Canine Nutrition Professional (Cert.CNP). I get to teach aspiring canine nutritionists from all over the world, and I love it.
